Learn a New Language and Embrace a New Culture

Learn a New Language and Embrace a New Culture

written by Everett Bailey

The world is changing and in many ways it is getting smaller.  Today it is so much easier to travel or communicate with people from other cultures.  But if you want to understand people from different cultures the easiest way to do that is to learn their language.  You can learn a new language and embrace a new culture at the same time.  Language is a reflection of the culture in which it is spoken.  Here is how language and culture are intertwined.

Why Learn a New Language

Learning a new language also teaches you behaviour that is appropriate to that culture, how to address people with respect and how to communicate effectively.  With the global economy and even smaller local businesses having the ability to do business abroad bilingualism is a highly sought after skill.  Bigger companies are always looking to get into new markets and if you have the skills to help pave the way then you have laid a path to excel in your field.

Starting Young

Learning a new language isn’t always easy, you need to speak it on a regular basis with fluent speakers to develop any proficiency.  Children with bilingual parents have an easier time as they start learning at a very young age.  If you want your child to speak a second or even a third language then start speaking to them in that language as early as possible.  They also get to embrace both cultures from a young age.

Children have an easier time distinguishing spoken words not of their own language.  As we grow up we are conditioned to our own language and only recognize the phonetics of our native language.  Children who learn young can speak without a noticeable accent.  Learning a second language helps to develop listening skills along with a better ability to retain information.

Culinary Differences.

Every country has its own selection of dishes to choose from. This can range from the most exotic of meats to the most healthy vegan meals. Each of them has its own benefits that they bring to the table.

Benefits of Multilingualism

Having multiple languages doesn’t just help you get a better job there are so many other benefits to it as well.  You get to understand the customs and expressions of other cultures.  It broadens your worldview like nothing else does and it encourages you to see more of the world.  You can understand another culture’s humor and view of the world.  It can open an incredible amount of doors for you.

Learning a new language actually has a physical impact on how your brain develops.  It can improve cognitive function and stave off dementia.

Why Society Needs the Arts

written by Everett Bailey

When times are lean one of the first things to experience budget cuts are the arts programs.  Music and art get cut in schools, there are fewer grants for local theater and music programs and the justification for it is that the arts aren’t really necessary.  Is that really true? Many will argue that it isn’t.  Can you imagine what Renaissance Italy would have looked like without all of the artists from that time period?  Let’s look at why society needs the arts.

Art Encourages Creativity

Art of any encourages the artist to think and act creatively, the artist creates something completely new.  It teaches practical lessons like design and creative problems solving.  These real world skills help us come up with creative solutions to practical problems.

Teaches Us About Our Culture

Studying art history and art appreciation gives students the opportunity to learn about the origins of our culture.  From early cave paintings to the digital art that is created today, all of it is a reflection of our culture.  Through studying art and art history we get snapshots of the past and learn about the values and ideas that have been passed down through our culture.

Art is a Reflection of Ourselves and our Culture

Creative individuals use art as their medium to express themselves.  Artists use art to convey what is going on in the world around them, from political commentaries to social issues.  This can include everything from street graffiti to the music that you hear on the radio.  Artists enlighten us to what is happening in our culture and what we need to change in order to grow.

Art Programs can Help At Risk Kids

More than any other group in our society at-risk kids need an outlet to express themselves.  After school art and music programs not only give them that opportunity it keeps them from getting into trouble.  These kids often come from single family homes in poorer neighborhoods, their parents don’t have the resources to enroll them in art and music classes that more affluent parents can.   Afterschool arts programs give them somewhere to go and something to do, they get to learn new skills and how to problems solve differently.  These programs are invaluable to the community.

We cannot underestimate just how important the arts are to our culture and communities. While art may not solve world hunger it does a tremendous amount of good.  The world can always use more beauty!
